Late winter to early spring; remove reverted green shoots whenever spotted. Cut all stems to 2–4 inches above water or soil in late winter. Throughout the season, immediately cut out any plain green stems at the base to maintain the variegated character.

Annually for main cutback; roguing of green shoots as needed. Schoenoplectus tabernaemontani 'Zebrinus' (zebra rush) needs an annual hard cutback in late winter to remove dead stems and encourage the fresh horizontally-banded new growth that makes this cultivar ornamental. Also remove any all-green shoots promptly as they arise, as these are more vigorous and will outcompete the variegated form.
