Late winter to early spring; rogue green shoots throughout the growing season. Cut all stems back to 2–4 inches above the waterline in late winter using loppers or shears. Snap or cut reverted green stems at base level as soon as they are noticed.

Schoenoplectus tabernaemontani 'Albescens' (white bulrush) requires annual cutback in late winter to clear dead stems and reveal attractive cream-and-green new growth. Like all variegated rush cultivars, remove any fully-green reverted shoots promptly — they grow faster and will overwhelm the paler form if left unchecked.
