Pruning sapodilla — FAQ
When should I prune sapodilla?
After harvest or during the dry season when the tree is least active. Remove deadwood and inward-growing branches with clean, sharp loppers. On young trees, head back the leader at about 1.2 m to encourage lateral branching into an open-vase form. Seal cuts over 20 mm in diameter with grafting wax or pruning paint to slow latex bleed.
How often does sapodilla need pruning?
Annually; formative pruning in years 1–3. Sapodilla is a slow-growing, long-lived tropical tree that needs relatively little pruning. Remove deadwood and crossing branches annually and train young trees to a low, open framework to ease harvest. Avoid heavy pruning — the latex-rich wood is slow to heal large wounds. Light, consistent maintenance is far preferable to drastic periodic cuts.
