How to prune salvia × sylvestris 'blauhügel'

After each bloom flush (late spring onward); late autumn for final cutback. Shear spent flowering stems back by half to two-thirds. For the end-of-season cut, reduce to 4–6 inches above the crown after hard frosts have ended all flowering.

Two to three times per season. Salvia 'Blauhügel' (Blue Hill) produces blue-violet spikes from late spring and reblooms well when sheared back after each flush. Cut by about half to two-thirds once spikes have faded to promote a second and third flowering period. Cut to a low framework in late autumn after frosts end.
