Annually; deadhead regularly through summer. Roseraie de l'Hay is a repeat-flowering Rugosa shrub of considerable vigour, eventually forming a large, dense mound. It needs only light annual pruning — remove dead and very old stems in late winter and reduce height modestly. Heavy pruning is counterproductive with Rugosas; the plant does best when pruning is restrained.
