Remove up to half (or more for rejuvenation) of the plant in late winter, cutting to healthy nodes. Pinch back stem tips on new growth to encourage branching. Remove dead or diseased wood at any time. Hard cuts to near ground level are a valid reset option for overgrown plants.
How often does red iochroma need pruning?
Annually (main cut); with lighter tip-pruning through the growing season. Red Iochroma (Iochroma fuchsioides) has the same fast, leggy growth habit as other iochromas and needs regular pruning to stay attractive and bloom freely. Without cuts, stems extend rapidly and flower production drops. It can be cut back to near ground level and will regrow vigorously, making it forgiving of aggressive pruning.
