Pruning raspberries — FAQ
When should I prune raspberries?
Summer-fruiting: cut old canes immediately after harvest (July–August). Autumn-fruiting: cut all canes to ground level in February.. For summer types: identify the brown, spent canes and cut them at ground level; select 6–8 of the strongest new green canes per plant, tie to wires 10 cm apart, and remove the rest. For autumn types: cut all canes to 5 cm above soil level in late winter — no selection needed.
How often does raspberries need pruning?
Annually — this is essential, not optional, for fruiting. Raspberries need systematic annual pruning because fruiting canes die after bearing. For summer-fruiting types, cut all canes that fruited this year to the ground after harvest, and tie in the new green canes for next year. For autumn-fruiting types, cut every cane to the ground in late winter — they fruit on new growth.
