Pruning ponytail palm — FAQ
When should I prune ponytail palm?
Any time for cosmetic removal of brown tips; no seasonal requirement. Snip only the very brown, dead ends of individual leaves with clean scissors, cutting at an angle to mimic the natural leaf tip. Do not cut into green tissue. Never cut the central growing rosette.
How often does ponytail palm need pruning?
Rarely; cosmetic only, a few times per year if desired. Ponytail palm (a succulent, not a true palm) needs almost no pruning. Never cut the main growing tip — it will not regrow from a terminal cut and the stem will die above that point. Only remove brown, dead leaf tips with scissors to neaten appearance. The plant grows slowly and rarely needs intervention.
