How to prune tropical pitcher plant

Year-round as pitchers die back; structural cuts in spring. Snip dead pitchers and leaves close to the stem with sterile scissors. To encourage branching on an overly long vine, cut the stem back to a healthy node — the plant will produce side shoots.

Light tidying as needed; structural pruning once a year at most. Tropical Nepenthes need only light tidying. Cut off individual pitchers once they brown and dry out, and remove any yellowing leaves at the base. The vines themselves rarely need cutting unless space is a concern; trimming a stem back hard can stimulate branching but slows pitcher production temporarily.
