When should I prune pineapple?
After fruiting; remove suckers in spring or early summer. Cut dead lower leaves cleanly at the stem. After harvest, cut the spent stem at the base. Select one or two of the strongest ratoons or slips to grow on; remove the rest with a clean cut at the base.
How often does pineapple need pruning?
As needed for tidying; after each fruiting cycle for ratoon management. Pineapple plants (Ananas comosus) need little conventional pruning. Remove dead or damaged lower leaves to keep the plant tidy and reduce disease risk. After fruiting, the main stem dies; cut it down and allow ratoons (suckers) to grow for a subsequent crop. Remove excess suckers to focus energy on the strongest.
