Phragmites australis (common reed) should be cut back hard annually to prevent the accumulation of thick dead stem layers and to manage its very aggressive spread. Cut all canes to ground or water level in late winter. Note: in many regions outside its native range, Phragmites is invasive — check local regulations before growing.
