How to prune phoenicean juniper

Late winter to early spring, or late summer. Pinch or snip soft new shoot tips in spring for slight density, or cut dead branches back to healthy wood. Do not cut into brown, leafless stems — leave a green shoot on every pruned branch.

Rarely — as needed for dead-wood removal or very light shaping. Phoenicean Juniper requires very little pruning. Remove dead or diseased branches as you spot them. Like all junipers, it cannot regenerate from leafless old wood, so hard pruning causes permanent die-back. Light tip-pinching in spring can nudge compact form, but this species is naturally well-shaped and rarely needs intervention.
