Pruning peppermint — FAQ
When should I prune peppermint?
Cut back after first flowering (typically midsummer); cut again in early autumn. Remove dead top growth in late autumn.. Cut all stems back to 5–8 cm above soil with sharp scissors. Remove spent flower spikes entirely. For very congested pots, unpot, divide the rhizome mass, and replant a fresh section in new compost.
How often does peppermint need pruning?
Hard cutback 2–3 times per season; light tip harvest every 1–2 weeks. Peppermint is a vigorous spreading herb that needs regular cutting back to stay tidy and productive. Cut stems back by half after first flowering to stimulate a second flush of aromatic new growth. Hard-prune in late autumn once growth dies back. Container peppermint needs more frequent trimming to prevent root congestion and maintain leaf size and menthol intensity.
