How to prune pennyroyal

After first flowering in midsummer; again in autumn before first frost. Cut stems back by half after the first flower flush using scissors or shears. In autumn shear the whole plant down to 3–5 cm above soil. Remove self-sown seedlings if you want to contain the spread.

Twice annually — post-flowering and autumn cut-back. Pennyroyal spreads quickly and benefits from regular trimming to keep it compact and delay flowering. Cutting back after the first flush of flowers encourages a second flush and prevents excessive self-seeding. Hard cut-back in autumn removes woody stems and promotes fresh basal growth the following spring.
