Pruning thai basil — FAQ
When should I prune thai basil?
From the moment plants reach 15 cm (6 in) tall; ongoing through the growing season. Pinch or cut stems just above the second or third set of leaves, always cutting to just above a leaf node. Remove flower spikes at their base immediately. Harvest from the top down, never stripping more than one-third of the plant at once.
How often does thai basil need pruning?
Every 1–2 weeks during the growing season. Thai Basil must be pruned regularly for the best harvests and longest productive life. Pinching stem tips encourages bushy, leafy growth. Remove flower spikes the moment they appear — once Thai Basil flowers (bolts), leaf production slows and flavour declines. Consistent harvesting IS the pruning routine for this herb.
