Ongoing from when plants reach 15 cm (6 in); remove flowers as soon as they form. Cut or pinch stems to just above a pair of leaves, encouraging two new shoots at each cut. Remove flower spikes at the base before they open. Never remove more than one-third of the plant in a single harvest.
How often does lemon basil need pruning?
Every 1–2 weeks during the growing season. Lemon Basil needs the same consistent pinching as sweet basil to stay productive and delay bolting. Harvest regularly from shoot tips to keep the plant compact and leafy. Remove flower spikes immediately — once plants set seed, lemon fragrance weakens and leaf production drops. Regular use is the best pruning.
