Late winter to early spring before bud break, or late autumn when fully dormant. Use a sharp pruning saw. Cut cleanly just outside the branch collar. Never cut back into bare, leafless wood — no dormant buds will activate. On young trees, select the strongest central leader and remove rivals as soon as they appear.
How often does noble fir need pruning?
Rarely — once in youth for leader training; thereafter only for dead or damaged growth. Noble Fir is a stately, slow-growing tree that needs very little pruning. Its naturally layered, blue-green form is best left intact. True firs do not regenerate from old bare wood, so keep pruning to removing dead, damaged, or diseased branches and correcting competing leaders on young trees before the structure is set.
