Pruning mother fern — FAQ
When should I prune mother fern?
Spring through summer when growth is active. Cut old, brown, or damaged fronds cleanly at the base with sterilised scissors or snips. If harvesting plantlets, wait until they show two or three tiny leaves before detaching and potting.
How often does mother fern need pruning?
As needed, typically a few fronds per season. Mother Fern does not need shaping pruning, but tidy removal of old or damaged fronds keeps it healthy. It is distinctive for producing tiny plantlets (bulbils) along its fronds — these are not removed unless you are propagating them. Cut tired fronds at the base to make room for fresh growth.
