How to prune delphinium 'magic fountains'

Cut spent main spikes in early to midsummer; full cut-back to ground in autumn. After the main flower spike finishes, cut it down to the nearest healthy side-shoot or to about 6–8 inches above the ground. Water and feed after cutting to support regrowth. In autumn, cut all remaining stems back to 2–3 inches above the crown.

Twice per season: mid-summer cut-back for second flush, full autumn cut-back. Delphinium 'Magic Fountains' is a compact series needing the same cut-back approach as taller delphiniums but is easier to manage. Deadhead or cut spent main spikes to lateral shoots to encourage a second flowering wave in late summer. Cut the whole plant to near ground level in autumn once foliage yellows and dies back.
