When should I prune butterhead lettuce?
Outer leaves from about 30 days after planting; full head harvest before any bolt stalk appears. For leaf harvesting, snap or cut outer leaves cleanly near the base. For full head harvest, cut across the stem 2–3 cm above soil level — the stump may re-sprout a smaller head.
How often does butterhead lettuce need pruning?
Outer leaves every 1–2 weeks; full head once mature (typically 60–70 days from sowing). Butterhead lettuce forms a soft, loose head and doesn't need pruning. You can harvest outer leaves as needed from about 30 days, allowing the centre to continue forming a head — this is cut-and-come-again use. Once the central stalk elongates and a flower stem appears (bolting), the leaves turn bitter; remove the whole plant.
