Pruning kalanchoe — FAQ
When should I prune kalanchoe?
Immediately after flowering ends, typically late winter to spring. Deadhead by pinching or snipping spent flower clusters at their stem junction. After all flowers have finished, cut leggy stems back by one-third to one-half just above a leaf node. Then give the plant a 6-week short-day treatment to initiate the next bloom cycle.
How often does kalanchoe need pruning?
Once per bloom cycle, annually. Kalanchoe benefits from deadheading spent flowers and a light prune after blooming to encourage the next flush of colour. Cut back leggy stems by up to one-half to promote bushy regrowth. A period of reduced light (about 14 hours of darkness per night for 6 weeks) is needed to trigger re-blooming.
