Pruning jerusalem artichoke — FAQ
When should I prune jerusalem artichoke?
Cut to 5 ft in mid-summer; cut to ground after the first hard frost. In mid-summer, use loppers or shears to trim tall stems down to around 5 feet to prevent wind damage. After the first hard frost kills the foliage, cut all remaining stems to an inch or two above soil level before or after tuber harvest.
How often does jerusalem artichoke need pruning?
Twice annually — mid-summer height reduction and post-frost cut-back. Jerusalem artichoke stems grow 6–10 feet tall and benefit from being cut back to 5 feet in mid-summer to reduce wind rock and encourage more compact growth. After frost kills the tops, cut all stems to ground level. Tubers are then dug as needed through winter. No other pruning is required.
