How to prune jersey knight asparagus

Late autumn to early winter, after frost kills and browns the fern foliage. Cut all fern stems to 2–3 inches (5–8 cm) above soil with clean loppers or secateurs. Clear the bed of debris to limit Asparagus beetle overwintering sites. Top-dress with compost after cutting.

Annually, every late autumn. Jersey Knight Asparagus needs the same annual fern cutback as all asparagus cultivars. After the harvest window closes in early summer, leave ferns to grow fully — they recharge the crown. Cut all ferns to within 2–3 inches of the ground in late autumn once frost browns them. Removing ferns too early weakens future yields.
