Late winter while fully dormant (January–February). Maintain a permanent framework of 2–4 main rods on wires. In winter, cut all side-laterals that have fruited back to 2–3 buds. Completely remove shoots that have fruited for more than 3 seasons. Pinch new shoots to 5 leaves past the last fruit cluster during summer.

Annually (essential). Issai is a self-fertile hardy kiwi that still requires disciplined annual pruning to stay productive and manageable. Like all Actinidia arguta, it fruits on spurs developed on one-year-old laterals. Without pruning it grows rampantly and crops poorly. Train on a pergola or trellis and prune each dormant season.
