How to prune indigo gem honeyberry

Immediately after harvest (late May–June) or late winter before bud break. Remove only dead, diseased or crossing branches for the first few years. Once the bush matures and crowds itself, cut the oldest 1–2 canes cleanly to the ground annually. Retain all vigorous young shoots and never shorten branch tips — fruiting buds are terminal.

Minimal for young plants; selective annual or biennial thinning on mature plants. Indigo Gem honeyberry produces fruit at branch tips, so tip-pruning destroys the crop. Young plants need almost no pruning. On mature bushes, thin the oldest, woodiest canes from the base every year or two to renew the framework without sacrificing tip buds that carry next year's berries.
