Pruning hyacinth — FAQ
When should I prune hyacinth?
Remove flower spike immediately after blooming (spring); leave foliage until fully yellowed. Cut the flower spike down to the base of the leaves once all florets have faded. Leave the strap-like leaves completely undisturbed until they turn yellow and pull away easily, then tidy them away.
How often does hyacinth need pruning?
Once per year — flower spike removal only; no other pruning needed. Hyacinths need minimal pruning. Deadhead the spent flower spike once blooms fade to prevent seed set and redirect energy to the bulb, but leave all foliage standing until it yellows and dies back naturally — this can take six weeks or more. Cutting the leaves early depletes the bulb and reduces next year's flowers.
