Once 2–3 fruits have set (midsummer). Pinch or cut the main vine tip beyond the last developing fruit. Shorten secondary side vines to 2–3 leaves past a fruit. Remove any dead or severely mildewed foliage to improve airflow late in the season.

Once during the fruiting season. Hubbard squash vines are vigorous and large but require only minimal pruning in most home gardens. Once 2–3 fruits per vine have set, pinch the growing tip to prevent endless vine extension and encourage fruit development. In tight spaces, trim back secondary vines.
