Pruning hoya — FAQ
When should I prune hoya?
Spring, after any flowering period ends; never before or during bud formation. Cut leggy non-flowering stems back to a healthy node to encourage branching. Leave all woody peduncle stubs intact — new flower clusters emerge from these each season. Use clean, sharp scissors to avoid crushing the stems.
How often does hoya need pruning?
Rarely; only as needed, roughly every 1–2 years. Hoya needs very little pruning. Crucially, never remove the short woody spurs (peduncles) — these are perennial flowering stems that bloom again each year. Only trim dead, damaged, or excessively long vines. Light trimming encourages branching. Let the plant grow freely for maximum flowering.
