After harvest in summer, or late winter while dormant. Remove the oldest, woodiest canes at ground level to allow vigorous younger shoots to take over. Lightly thin the canopy to improve light penetration without cutting into productive one-year-old wood.
How often does honeyberry need pruning?
Light thinning every 2–3 years; avoid pruning young plants under 3 years old. Honeyberry (haskap) needs minimal pruning in its first three years — just remove dead or damaged wood. Mature plants benefit from thinning out old, unproductive canes every few years to keep the centre open and maintain berry yields. Over-pruning reduces fruiting as berries form on one-year-old wood.
