Late winter after catkins have shed pollen but before leaves emerge. Cut one in five of the oldest stems at or near ground level each year to renew the shrub on a rolling basis. Annually — light renewal pruning; full renovation coppice every 8–12 years if needed. Corylus avellana 'Purpurea' (Red Filbert) benefits from regular pruning to keep it productive and to show off its purple foliage. Thin out old stems every few years to encourage vigorous new growth. Remove suckers promptly. Traditional coppicing on a longer cycle is also an option for rejuvenation.
