How to prune hair sedge

Early spring before new growth emerges. Run gloved fingers or a wide-toothed comb through the clump to pull out dead brown blades. Trim any obviously dead or discoloured tips with scissors. Do not cut the whole clump down to ground level.

Annually or as needed. Hair sedge (Carex comans 'Frosted Curls') needs minimal pruning. In spring, comb out dead foliage with gloved hands or a rake. Avoid cutting back hard — unlike ornamental grasses, evergreen sedges do not regenerate well from a hard cut into old growth. Remove only dead or brown tips as needed.
