Pruning guzmania — FAQ
When should I prune guzmania?
After the central flower spike fades, typically several months after flowering. Cut the spent mother rosette off at the base once it begins to decline. Allow pups to reach at least 10–15 cm tall before severing them from the mother with a clean knife. Leave pups in the pot or repot individually.
How often does guzmania need pruning?
Once per plant lifecycle; pup separation as needed when pups mature. Guzmania is a monocarpic bromeliad — the central rosette flowers once then dies, producing offsets (pups) at the base. Pruning is minimal: remove the spent central rosette after flowering by cutting it away cleanly. Separate mature pups once they reach one-third the size of the parent to propagate new plants.
