How often does gum palm need pruning?
As needed — usually once a year or less. Gum Palm (Dioon spinulosum) needs minimal pruning. Only remove fully dead, brown fronds by cutting them cleanly at the trunk. Like all cycads, it is extremely slow-growing; green fronds must never be removed. There are no shaping or thinning cuts required — simply clean up dead growth as it appears.
