How to prune grapefruit

Annually; skirt and sucker maintenance as needed. Grapefruit trees grow large and vigorous; annual pruning maintains an open structure and manageable height. Remove crossing, dead, or diseased wood and water sprouts. Skirt-prune lower branches to improve airflow at ground level. Unlike heavy fruit-tree renovation, grapefruit responds poorly to drastic cuts — keep each year's removal modest.
