How to prune gasteria (ox tongue)

Any time of year for leaf removal; spring for separating offsets. Pull dried outer leaves gently downward from the stem. Cut spent flower stalks at the base once flowering is finished. To separate pups, unpot and gently twist or cut rooted offsets away from the mother plant.

Rarely — tidy as needed; separate offsets every few years. Gasteria (Ox Tongue) needs very little pruning. It grows slowly in a stacked rosette and stays naturally tidy. Remove shrivelled or damaged outer leaves by pulling them cleanly away from the base. Flower stalks can be cut off after blooming if desired. Pups can be separated in spring as a propagation step.
