When should I prune fuggle hops?
Post-harvest in autumn (September–October) for full cutback; early spring for shoot selection. Cut all bines down to 3–4 inches (8–10 cm) after harvest using loppers. In spring, allow shoots to sprout, select the 2–3 most vigorous, and train clockwise up strings or a trellis. Remove all surplus shoots at ground level as they emerge.
How often does fuggle hops need pruning?
Annually — autumn cutback and spring shoot thinning. Fuggle Hops need the same annual bine-management routine as other hop cultivars. Cut all growth to the ground each autumn after harvest. Select 2–3 strong shoots in spring and train them up supports, removing the rest. Fuggle is a traditional English variety with moderate vigour — still needs full annual management for a productive, healthy plant.
