How to prune fagus sylvatica 'purpurea'

Late summer (July–August). During formative years, select a strong central leader and remove competing upright stems. On established trees, use a sharp pruning saw to remove dead wood cleanly back to the collar. Avoid heavy crown thinning as beech responds poorly to large-scale cutting.

Formative pruning for first 3–5 years; thereafter only as needed. Purple beech needs very little pruning once established. Remove dead, diseased, or crossing branches as they appear. Formative pruning in the first few years can establish a clear trunk and balanced crown. Prune in late summer rather than winter or early spring to reduce risk of disease and excessive bleeding.
