Pruning echinopsis — FAQ
When should I prune echinopsis?
Spring, when pups are actively forming. Twist or cut offsets cleanly at the base with a sterile blade; let the cut surface callous for 2–3 days before potting. Remove any dead or discoloured tissue by slicing back to clean, healthy flesh.
How often does echinopsis need pruning?
Rarely — only when offsets need thinning or damage is present. Echinopsis cacti rarely need pruning. Remove dead, shrivelled, or damaged tissue with a clean, sharp knife. If offsets (pups) crowd the pot, detach them in spring to propagate. Otherwise leave the plant alone — cutting into healthy green tissue invites rot and does nothing for vigour.
