Directly after flowering, mid-summer. Cut flowered shoots back to vigorous new growth lower on the stem. Remove one-third of the oldest, largest-diameter canes at ground level each year to keep the shrub open and productive.

Annually after flowering. Deutzia scabra 'Plena' is an old-wood bloomer with double white-pink flowers in early summer. Prune right after flowering by shortening flowered shoots to strong young laterals and removing the oldest, thickest stems at the base. Do not prune in autumn or spring, as this sacrifices the buds set on last year's wood.
