How to prune dendrobium phalaenopsis

After the last flower on a spike has faded. Cut the spent flower spike back to just above the highest node using sterilised scissors or snips. Leave old pseudobulbs (canes) in place unless completely dried and brown — they store energy and can produce new keikis or reflower.

Annually after flowering; dead canes removed only when fully spent. Dendrobium phalaenopsis (D. bigibbum type) should have spent flower spikes cut back once all blooms have dropped. Do not remove old canes — they can rebloom for several years. Only remove a cane once it has fully shrivelled and dried. Beyond spike removal, this orchid needs minimal pruning.
