Pruning cucumber — FAQ
When should I prune cucumber?
During active growth; remove side shoots when plants are young. For vining types, pinch off lateral shoots below the fifth node to concentrate early energy in the main stem. Once fruiting, remove leaves that are yellowed, diseased, or shading fruit heavily. Pinch the growing tip when the plant reaches the top of its support structure.
How often does cucumber need pruning?
Lightly throughout the season. Cucumbers benefit from training and light pruning, especially in greenhouse or vertical growing systems. Pinch off side shoots on the lower section of the plant to improve airflow and focus growth. Remove any yellowed leaves and dead growth. For outdoor bush varieties, pruning is largely unnecessary beyond tidying damaged foliage.
