How to prune crown imperial

After flowers drop (mid to late spring). Cut the spent flower stalk back to foliage level with clean, sharp secateurs. Leave all remaining stem and leaves fully in place until they yellow and the stem pulls away freely. Avoid disturbing the bulb.

Annually after each flowering. Crown Imperial requires minimal pruning. Remove the spent flower stem once blooms have dropped, cutting it down to where it meets the emerging foliage. The large leaves and stem base must remain to photosynthesize and feed the bulb until they die back naturally in early summer — typically 6–8 weeks post-bloom.
