Pruning crocodile fern — FAQ
When should I prune crocodile fern?
Any time, as dead or damaged fronds appear. Cut dead or yellowing fronds at their base using clean, sharp scissors. Never shear or cut across healthy fronds. If the plant is very crowded, remove the oldest outer fronds at the crown to improve light and airflow to the centre.
How often does crocodile fern need pruning?
As needed; infrequent — typically a few times per year at most. Crocodile fern needs very little pruning. Remove individual fronds that turn brown or yellow by cutting cleanly at the base. Do not trim across green fronds — cut ends will not heal and will remain brown. Beyond dead-frond removal, this fern is best left alone to grow its distinctive textured foliage.
