Pruning cosmos — FAQ
When should I prune cosmos?
Deadhead throughout summer and early autumn; cut back if floppy in midsummer. Snip individual spent flower heads back to the nearest leaf node or emerging side bud. For tall, floppy plants, cut the whole plant back by one-third to a strong side branch — it will regrow and rebloom within a few weeks in good conditions.
How often does cosmos need pruning?
Deadhead every 1–2 weeks during bloom; optional midsummer cutback once. Cosmos thrives with regular deadheading, which dramatically extends the flowering season. Cut or pinch spent blooms back to the next set of leaves or a side bud. Cosmos can also be cut back by one-third in midsummer if they become too tall and floppy. Allow some late-season flowers to set seed if you want self-sown plants next year.
