Late winter to early spring. Cut dead branches flush to the trunk collar using clean, sharp tools. Never top the tree or remove living whorls of branches — the plant cannot form a new leader and the form is lost irreversibly.
How often does cook pine need pruning?
Rarely — only to remove dead branches as they occur. Cook Pine (Araucaria columnaris) needs virtually no pruning. Like other araucarias, it will not regenerate from cuts into mature wood, and trimming the apex destroys its distinctive columnar form permanently. Remove dead lower branches cleanly at the collar when they occur and otherwise leave the tree alone.
