How to prune compacta holly

Early spring before budbreak, or after the spring growth flush (late May–June). Hand-shear outer growth lightly to maintain a uniform surface; remove dead or overcrowded interior stems with bypass pruners. Never cut back hard into leafless old wood — regrowth from bare stems is very slow.

Once a year for light shaping; otherwise only as needed for dead wood. Compacta Holly is a slow-growing, naturally dense dwarf Japanese holly that holds a tidy form on its own. Formal shearing is optional — many gardeners never prune it at all beyond removing dead wood. If you want a crisper hedge or shape, a single light trim annually is plenty.
