How to prune clematis 'comtesse de bouchaud'

Late winter to early spring (February–March). Cut every stem back hard to approximately 30–45 cm above ground, just above a visible pair of buds. Remove all the old top growth from the trellis or support. Feed with a high-potash fertiliser after pruning. Vigorous new shoots emerge from the base and lower buds and flower freely from midsummer.

Annually (hard cut every late winter). Clematis 'Comtesse de Bouchaud' is Group 3, producing its soft mauve-pink flowers on current-year growth from midsummer. Hard prune all stems to 30–45 cm each late winter. This reliable, vigorous clematis responds very well to the annual cut, producing strong stems and an extended summer display.
