How to prune chinese juniper

Late winter to early spring, or early summer after spring growth hardens. Shear outer growth lightly for formal shapes, or use secateurs for a more natural look. Cut back to a foliage-bearing lateral; never cut into bare, leafless interior wood.

Once or twice annually for shape; dead wood as needed. Chinese juniper is widely used for hedging and topiary and tolerates regular pruning. Trim for shape in late winter or early summer. Remove dead branches back to a healthy fork at any time. Like all junipers, it will not regenerate from bare old wood, so always retain foliage on pruned stems.
