How to prune chinese astilbe

Late autumn or early spring before new growth emerges. Cut all stems to within 5 cm (2 in) of the ground with shears. Chinese astilbe blooms in mid-to-late summer on current season's growth, so the spring cut does not affect flowering.

Annually (once per year); divide every 4 years. Chinese astilbe is more drought-tolerant than other astilbes and equally easy to prune. Cut foliage to ground level in late autumn or early spring. The upright late-season plumes hold well into winter and can be left for ornamental value before the spring cutback. No deadheading is necessary for reblooming.
