How to prune chain fern

Early spring, before new fronds unfurl. Cut individual fronds at the base using loppers or strong scissors — mature fronds can reach 1–2 m. Remove fronds that have died back or show significant frost damage, leaving healthy green fronds intact throughout the year.

Remove old or winter-damaged fronds at the base in early spring before new growth emerges. The fronds are long and dramatic — cut only dead or badly tatty ones.
